Week Twelve

Final reflections. I guess all good things have a beginning and an end. Hopefully this will be just a pause before we can do something similar again and/or at least periodically try out what we've learned over these past 12 weeks. This was really fun, even if some parts were very challenging, other parts were really fun, and even more parts interesting and innovative.

The most important thing I learned is that there is so much out there that I haven't tried and that it is really important to make time for exploring and trying new things and reflecting upon how it can or can't be applied.

The most challenging exercise by far were Myspace and Flickr. I'll go back sometime and try Facebook and Photobucket to see if these are a bit easier. The other challenge was finding the time to do this but it was all very worthwhile.

My most favorite discoveries were Youtube, Rollyo and LibraryThing. Google Reader was also my most favorite useful thing...how nice to get everything with one sign-in and then they update my account! One almost becomes disappointed when one can't put a favorite website into Google Reader because they don't have an RSS feed or similar option.

There are definitely some possibilities for this technology within a library setting. Maybe the study guides, booklists, and book clubs will take on an expanded identity.

The "self-directed" learning model was useful though some things were hard to learn.

I can't think of too much to improve upon this program's format or concept. The drawings were definitely a motivator to meet the deadlines! Sometimes when I would miss a deadline, to know that I wasn't completely out of the running was very reassuring. Having deadlines was helpful too otherwise I am not sure I would have spent the time doing this. It is very awkward to "play" at work when there are so many other things that definitely need doing. Having "permission" to do this was great! I really hope you will offer another discovery program like this. I would definitely participate! How nice to have a "team" identify the "useful" items out there for Web 2.0, something I definitely don't have time for as there are so many things that may or may not be relevant. It is also nice to have, for the most part, two weeks to complete a task. One week just isn't quite enough time, especially if there is alot going on. This is nice also, compared to a formal workshop, that it can be fit in whenever one has a bit of time, either at work or at home. A very big thank you to all of the APL Challenge organizers for giving me a push in the tush to learn some new things!

When do we get to do this again? Perhaps after a long snooze, a bowl of something yummy and a roll in some catnip?

Week Eleven

Ah,springtime, my favorite time of year. The sun is just right for my cat naps, not too hot, not too cold. Weeks eleven and twelve were just right too and very much the "cat's meow"! I loved both the LibraryThing and Rollyo. They were both very easy to set up and use. For LibraryThing, what a great way to organize all of my favorite cookbooks and keep track of which favorite recipe came out of which book, using tags. It also is a great way to find other people with similar reading or collecting tastes and a way to find other books that I didn't know about previously. LibraryThing could work well in creating lists of resources on similar topics...a very narrow attempt at "webfeet" searching. One could put similar books, electronic subscription resources and websites together in one searchable place. It could also be a fun way to highlight what staff is reading and/or what the community is reading and create a "virtual" reading club.

For Rollyo, it was very easy to use! I tried vacations, bookclubs and recipes. Some of these were a bit far-fetched but that is ok. I made custom searchrolls for vacations, bookclubs, and recipes and what a great way to keep track of favorite websites as well as find other similar websites!

The library could make use of Rollyo by putting items by "topic", creating "in-house" links, "subscription" sites as well as web sites.

Week Nine

Well between week eight and week nine, both were very challenging, time consuming and frustrating. Evem though I'm a cat, new tricks don't come easy, especially when there is little time in the day. These are great tools of entertainment and information, perfect for someone with lots of time on their hands. Now I know why I haven't done either before. As with myspace and podcasting, I just can't seem to figure out how to invite friends that I know. I really don't want to know perfect strangers. Us cats are known for our finickiness. Without friends e-mails, not sure how else to do this. Probably the most frustrating part of this whole exercise. Besides that aspect, Youtube was very easy to use. The hardest part was finding a user name that wasn't already taken. My URL is http://youtube.com/King27kitty. I chose Mr. Bean at the library since I was in some desperate need of some humor. Frustrating that I couldn't get it to sit nicely on my blog...you will notice you can't view the entire screen shot of the video. You may want to go to Youtube and search Mr. Bean and Library...it really is worth a good laugh. I also found a number of music videos and created a playlist (you will see at the very bottom of this blog). I was quite impressed with the wide variety of music available with videos, especially the "old" stuff. Adding the video and the playlist to the blog was very easy..the embedding stuff. At first it wasn't intuitive because I thought it was a "video" but it isn't...it is a java thingymahopper. Just exploring Youtube was hours so didn't explore other sites. Most interesting thing I learned is that if one has no life at all, they can never complain about being bored. Youtube could keep one amused for years. If you ran out of things to watch, you could then learn how to upload videos which actually would be very cool too. Using Youtube in a library setting might be interesting, especially to broadcast a public licence approved movie remotely. In-house it might be frustrating because it might stop and start quite occassionally as I experienced with some of the videos this evening. It might also be a way to broadcast author visits, special programs such as the Russ Parsons program, or concerts. Since I learn much better by "seeing" than "audioing" Youtube was a great visual help in showing me how to use Youtube.
Podcasts were interesting though I never did figure out how to put my podcast site onto this blog. I finally gave up. I chose podnova.com as my choice for podcast downloads. Some interesting ones that I found were:
The La Porte Report http://leoville.com (yep I'm a nerdy cat) and YaBookcast at yabookcast.libsyn.com which I found fun. Horn book had a podcast too but I couldn't figure out how to get it into my podnova profile. I think I would find podcasts useful, especially for professional development and training and keeping up with new and relevant information. It would be fun to do a podcast of new materials for specific age ranges as it would be another way to reach people. You know how people and cats can be, we never read signs, much less lists.
Other libraries using podcasts include Sunnyvale and Denver Public Library. Sunnyvale had both audio and video broadcasts of library programs and "voice" stories...actually pretty cool. Denver Public Library did booktalks which was also cool. podcast.denverlibrary.org/. This learning is hard on the brain...time for a cat nap.

Week Eight

Social networking is interesting but alot of it isn't what it seems. Creating an account was easy, as was setting up a profile, etc. The hardest thing was finding friends. I thought how fun, I'll just look for a famous musician and invite them to be my friend. Well, that is where it was quite, shall I say, eye opening, not to mention surprising. I found nothing on what I wanted and everything I didnt' want. I know there are some cool cat teens and twenty somethings out there with a Myspace account but trying to find them by name is almost impossible, or, if you do find the name, it definitely isn't the cat. Inviting a total stranger to be a friend was very uncomfortable, not to mention, the total stranger may say one thing and be something completely different. Imagine, I was hoping to find another cat with similar interests and find out it is a bulldog instead...yikes...guess that is why I like to be a one cat family. I tried adding music but that didn't work well either. Yo Yo Ma definitely isn't a cello player on Myspace. Some musicians weren't even listed and weird stuff, not even a remote resemblence to the real one.
The pros, if any, would be to keep in touch with people, not necessarily something I would prefer to do. The cons, well just about everything else...kind of like my friend Spooky...you just let it all hang out and don't get much in return. I guess these sites are popular because it lets one post pictures and meet friends and friends of friends. Not sure there is much usefulness for us. Not sure we would be the cool cats to befriend the kind of friends we are wanting to befriend. The url is http://www.myspace.com/kingkity

Week Seven

Google Docs is interesting and definitely could work to one's advantage. For instance, I am a pure carnivore, everyone in the feline family knows that and you would think my owners would too. They are always trying to give me lettuce or tomatoes or spinach or asparagus. I just don't eat those things. I created my menu preferences and hope this will help in my menu planning and food preparation in Google Docs. It was easy to set up and easy to use. Just a bit slow in processing. My favorite feature was how similiar it is to Microsoft Word or Excel. Very easy to use and a nice way to collaborate on a document without sending a slew of e-mails back and forth. I could definitely see a use for it, though speedier would be nicer.I couldn't figure out how to post the form into my blog. I would think that would be doable. Tried collaborating to the blog but it didn't recognize that. Tried pasting the long e-mail link but it didn't "link". It is called King Kitty's Menu. With some great help, now I can say it is very easy to share documents...I just had to click on the publish tab...now you can view it. To see my menu, check out http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pFF6E3GNzUOD7rjk5yKhcJQ.
Other applications include the Fun Brochure, Display cases, input to the Emergency Manual, and other documents that solicit input by everyone.

My Valentine's Day pose

Week Six

Week six was a bit more challenging but interesting. Tres neat that I can upload all of my pictures to one place and not have to take up lots of memory on my owners' computer. Also neat that I can access all of my photos from anywhere! I do like being able to find other photos of cats...almost better than prowling the neighborhood...I said almost ... since I still like to know who has been in my territory, let the new kids on the block know who's King (moi), and stop and smell the flowers along the way. Did you see my new photos? Since I have 9 lives, nice to think how I might want to spend them. In Ancient Egypt, cats were considered sacred and we were "mummieized" so that we could pass to the afterlife with our owner. I hope I can be reincarnated into someone handsome and artistic such as these photos so that I will live a pampered life and be loved and adored as I have so far.

Uploading photos to Flickr was a challenge. First, I downloaded some special software that took 11+ minutes to download only to find out it didn't help at all. I downloaded it again and it still was useless. After that, time for a nap. I was worn out. I finally had to send a photo to my e-mail, save to my desktop, and then upload into my Flickr account. Once I figured this out, it was very easy to do and easier still to add a comment and name. When I did this, I was also hoping for a link to upload to my blog but didn't see one.

As for adding my own photos to Flickr, there must be an easier way than to save to desktop and upload... I will have to explore further, after I've sunbathed and contemplated this a bit.

As for tagging, this was quite interesting because I tag alot throughout the neighborhood, if you know what I mean...but tagging in Flickr is more, shall I say, civilized? I just put in "Cat" and you can find me! Of course I did see the tag "cute" and thought that was a nice tag too but it didn't lead back to me...just to another cat and a bunch of other pictures having nothing to do with me. Picking the right name for tagging is important, especially if one wants to find their pictures again and/or similar pictures. It does make a difference if you capitalize or not so I guess it might be best to not capitalize.

I was a bit confused (I must be getting up in years...my birthday is tomorrow!) when I looked at Contacts and Groups. Definitely don't want to belong to a group as I am a one cat family and don't want to share their indulgence on me with anyone else. I tried Contact and think I have Contacts now, though not sure they want to be part of my Contacts list. I tried to go back and modify it but I couldn't seem to get back there.

The Flickr mashups looked fun. Would be nice to make a motivational picture for my owner...something with a picture of a chicken or fish as a daily reminder of my favorite food! I wouldn't mind my owner putting vacation pictures into that trip planning mashup. That would be fun too...to see where they went and what they saw as I have no desire to travel. I tried it once to the desert, I even had a birds eye view by sitting by the steering wheel, but I was so scared and shook so bad, my owner thought I was going to have a heart attack...and I was only a kitten...nope, travelling is not for me.

Flickr is a great way to share fun photos with family, friends and the community. As we already have a Flickr account, it is a fun way to share community events with the community. It is also a fun documentation of all of the fun things we have done over time. It also might be a way to upload photos for publicity.

Andre Rieu from his website

And...since we have 9 lives, if I can't be James Bond, perhaps Andre Rieu? He plays the violin beautifully, gets to travel the world and makes classical music tres fun!

James Bond 007 by hayash naohiro2007

As we were saying, we have 9 lives. In my next life, I would like to come back as James Bond 007...handsome, adventurous and always a gentleman. Of course my owner would like that too. Wonder if I'd still have to sleep at the foot of the bed?

Week Five

Wiki, wiki, wiki...that is what I'm doing and it is pretty fast! I have read about wikis before and watched a short video clip a couple of months ago but never actually set one up.

Wikis can be reliable and a valuable source of information if it was a serious wiki. Even for fun, it could be useful. It definitely could be a useful tool for internal use...sure would save alot of e-mailing back and forth amongst different staff members. It could be useful in planning a program or service in which one would like input from a number of people.

I added favorite pets, favorite restaurants and favorite music to the wiki. Got a little confused when doing the pet one (the first attempt)...somehow ended up doing a sidebar and then figured out how to add to the list. For the restaurant and music edit, it was very easy...just add content.

The wiki could be useful internally as well as externally if working on a collaboration in-house or soliciting comments from the community. It could also help build local content on current events that currently isn't all located in one place.

Well time to wiki out of here and catch a cat nap!

Week Four

Ahhh, rain and sunshine, in just the right amounts. This week we attempted del.icio.us and tagging. Quite fun actually, once we realized it wasn't something yummy to eat. del.icio.us is a wonderful source, especially if your hard drive crashes because you won't lose your bookmarks. Also, one can access the bookmarks from any computer, not necessarily the one in which all of the bookmarks are saved under favorites, making them more accessible day or night, work, home or on vacation.

Del.icio.us isn't only just an easy way to create bookmarks but a great way to save more permanently bookmarks. It also is a helpful tool in discovering new favorites or bookmarks through the tags.

Besides easy access, finding undiscovered websites through additonal tags, this could be useful in sorting my own favorites. Of course it might be helpful to have an authority control list so I am not giving some things one name and other things different names in which they really should have the same name to make it easy to find.

The most useful thing learned is that bookmarks can be portable and accessed anywhere.

It could be useful in grouping like things together for patrons and for patrons to add to the web of information. If someone wanted a place to search for authors or a list of good books for children, one could create a starting place and new ones could be added or found by anyone through the tags. When developing an Internet web page for an organization, one tries to categorize like things together, assuming how a person might look for them but the assumption might be wrong and the information goes unnoticed and unused.

This could be useful as an in-house resource in which staff could add useful information for each other too.

Would I use RSS?

Hmmm, RSS feeds coming to a Google Reader is very cool. I definitely will use them...nice to keep current. The library could use RSS feeds to advertise programs, fun books to read, or newest technology.

Sunnyside Up!

The sunshine's out, the mountains are snow-capped, life is good! I've been missing my sunbathing but yesterday was just perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. Ah the life of a cat. Sleep, stretch, eat, and sleep some more. Well this week was a bit short on naps as the RSS thing was challenging but fun. I had no idea all of this information was out there! Got the Google Reader account set up and that was a piece of cake. Then I subscribed to not two, but a number of fun RSS feeds. How nice for the information to come to me! Saves time, can keep up with the newest information out there. Definitely the cat's meow! I subscribed to the following and even set up folders to help manage them. For news, one definitely needs a world's view to know what is happening elsewhere as well as perspective on the U.S. so BBC News was my first choice. For national news, NYT, and of course, the WSJ. For fun, and to keep myself amused, Lolcats'n' Funny Pics, for good food, Betty Crocker Recipes & Epicurious.com, for good books, Guys Read, Myreadablefeast, and for educational, A to Z Kids Stuff and Librarian's Index to the Internet.

The easiest way to find feeds was through the Google Reader. By clicking on Add Subsription and search by a favorite subject, I got a nice list. Looking at the list with the most or least subscribers, I could tell the popular ones from the ho hum ones. Also, by date, I could see which ones were kept up to date or others that had passed their prime. Other times I would look for a favorite website, such as LII.org and see if there was one of those RSS symbols. I didn't quite get how to "drag" the symbol over into my reader. Ended up copying and pasting the link directly into the Google Reader. Another curious thing I noticed, and I am a cat, so curiousity is one of my strengths, although it could be a weakness (curiousity killed the cat), is when one is on a site and wants to subscribe, there is usually a drop down or symbols for "readers" but I never saw one for Google Reader. Is Google Reader not popular or common enough to be on these sites?

After an afternoon of napping, I tried Syndic8.com and Technorati. Looked at Boing Boing...a bit different I must say. There was another site that sounded very cool...Slashdot... but a bit too techie for me....I was hoping for general info. updates on Apple but got alot of ho hum stuff.....remember, my favorite pastimes are sunbathing, stretching and eating! Don't want or care about details... too much wasted brain power that would take me away from preening my lovely fur. I didn't get Technorati....what's with rising posts and stories vs. headlines. The headlines seemed the same as the newspaper headlines and rising posts, nice that they are rising but not too much of interest. Perhaps I need a bit more work with these two sites to realize their full potential and usefulness.

Wasn't sure how to add an RSS to my blog. Some sites didn't seem to encourage it....was afraid I might have to pay for it...and on my kitty cat salary of canned and crunchies daily, I wasn't about to give those up. Looking at the layout of the Blog, there must be a place to put RSS but didn't see where...layout, post, somewhere else?

Checked back on my feeds the next day....wow it sure is nice to have them come in one place and so easy! Now to determine, shall I laze around or see what's cooking, what's the latest in news, or find a good book for my owner to read aloud to me? Decisions, decisions! It's ruff being a cat.

Photos

It's a hard life being a cat. Now they want to take my picture with a cell phone of all things. I thought that was what cameras were for. The little person in the family is always chasing me around trying out the digital camera on me ...now the big person is trying a cell phone camera on me and I am really not in the mood. The pictures burned to CD didn't have my glorious poses on them. Must be on another CD but no one wants to look for the "right one" which could have been so easily uploaded. Those are the better photos as I know I posed numerous times with this crazy King Kitty crown on my head...pink of all colors...from the Royal Party at the library...which I didn't even attend! The big person has now learned lots...not only how to take a photo on the cell phone but delete some of the less desirable photos, including the dark blobs, and e-mail them too, something never before attempted. Why someone would want to text message by phone is quite perplexing. The keys on the phone pad are small (that is where sharp claws are quite handy), one has to keep changing from text to symbols and back again to type in the e-mail. One mistake and one has to start all over again. Quite alot of work but compared to dark rooms, photo chemicals and specialized equipment, not too bad... we are now in the 21st century!

King Kitty, Calling cards, and Settings

I've been away awhile, enjoying the rain, disappointed that there hasn't been much beef or chicken lately, and creating quite a ruckus on the home front. My owner has found a new dinner, Trader Joe's has a salad in a bag that comes complete with lettuce, mandarin oranges, slivered almonds and salad dressing. No chicken, no beef! Quite a disappointment to me so I left a calling card for my owner...it was quite funny really...the comforter had to be washed but of course not in the washing machine...but my owner thought it might fit this time because there was no time to go to the laundry mat...of course 10 minutes into the wash cycle, the smell of burning rubber, my owner figured it out..doesn't fit...wring it out, put it on clotheline to dry enough to bag up to take to laundry mat on weekend....well once flung onto the clotheline...clotheline broke...big heap on ground...hee hee...guess I'll be getting some more chicken and beef...or maybe not quite yet. All doors leading to beds and comfy places to sleep have been closed off...I am banished to the sofa with a measly throw blanket. Guess I'll have to get those cute eyes of mine working...like the cat on Shrek...it works every time. My owner, I think, has figured out the settings to respond to blog :)

Blog use

A lovely rainy evening, just perfect to perch on my owner's lap, get lots of pet pets and scratchy scratches and ponder blogs. Maybe the library could ask kids and tweens to write down their favorite computer games on a large post-it board as they come into the Children's room. To see if their game is the "most awesome one out there", they could check the Kids and Tweens blog to see how their game compared to others and to add their own comments. Maybe there would even be a drawing for a fun-filled game day at the library, complete with xbox 360 and wii. Well back to other more pressing matters, what shall we have for dinner tomorrow night? Chicken and rice is pretty good and easy...just brown chicken, set aside. In large bowl, mix poultry seasoning, 1 cup of milk, 2 1/2 cups water, 1 cup jasmine rice, salt and pepper.Mix well and pour into baking dish. Set browned chicken on top, cover, bake at 350 for about 1 1/2 hours. Chicken is really good. Measurements & ingredients may not be exact to the recipe from the Taste of Home Cookbook: Timeless Recipes from Trusted Home Cooks.

Weeks One and Two

King Kitty and my ownee have decided to take part in the Library 2.0 Challenge so that we can expand our minds and technical skills to keep up with the omnivores of technology, especially the kids, teens and young adults of the library world and beyond.

Setting up a blog is very easy...so easy I think my ownee should set up several....one for each of my nine lives. It would be very easy to become a blogger and if we find some interesting blogs, we might even become regular bloggers. Of course documenting my nine lives should keep my ownee a blogger for some time.

Of course, perhaps there is a way to use this technology to provide new, different or even the same library information and services (yet repackaged in new and improved bell and whistle technology) to the children and teens. I am a 17 years young kitty and my ownee is falling way behind the technology curve. She still doesn't text message or have a virtual pet...except me...hopefully when I go to kitty heaven, I will then become her virtual pet. In the meantime, I am missing out on my daily pet pets from the kids because they are too busy playing games on the computer. Sure my ownee can type, use a cell phone, fax a letter, e-mail, and create a webpage but she is so behind the times with the new, cool tricks of the trade such as blogs, wikis, setting up meetings and even uploading pictures to the web. Perhaps these new tools and tricks will help my ownee work smarter, learn more about the kids and teens in the community and what they find useful, find fast and fabulous carnivorous recipes for my dinner, get my lovely feline face into the spotlight of the worldwide web, archive my lovely personality for decades to come, and along the way, discover some new and different tools that would be applicable for the library, specifically for the children and young adults of the community.

To make use of a blog for the library, my ownee needs to learn more about the users of this technology, specifically the kids and teens, how they use it, is there relevance for it in the library, and how can we capitalize on it.

King Kitty and Ownee January 21, 2008

Hello and let me introduce you to myself. I am King Kitty. I am 17 years young, have lovely long tabby cat fur, green eyes, and my favorite past-time is to sleep and eat, much like my ownee. Today we were up at 3:17 a.m., or should I say one of us was up and moving about? My ownee was busy sleeping until one of my louder meows got the attention I deserved. Still didn't get breakfast but did get a quick pet. Guess I'll have to wait til 5:00 a.m. before I get breakfast....sure hope not much later than that and I hope it is real food, not canned. I am a carnivore through and through so prefer beef, chicken or fish, unlike my ownee.

Well enough about me. Today was a big day! My ownee has signed us up for a gmail account. It was quite the "cat's meow", if I say so myself. It was very simple to do. We also signed up for a blog, starring me...King Kitty. Maybe my ownee will even post my picture one of these days.

A blog is a great way to post and archive fabulous and all important information such as a day in the life of moi or more frivolous information about my ownee.
