Week Five

Wiki, wiki, wiki...that is what I'm doing and it is pretty fast! I have read about wikis before and watched a short video clip a couple of months ago but never actually set one up.

Wikis can be reliable and a valuable source of information if it was a serious wiki. Even for fun, it could be useful. It definitely could be a useful tool for internal use...sure would save alot of e-mailing back and forth amongst different staff members. It could be useful in planning a program or service in which one would like input from a number of people.

I added favorite pets, favorite restaurants and favorite music to the wiki. Got a little confused when doing the pet one (the first attempt)...somehow ended up doing a sidebar and then figured out how to add to the list. For the restaurant and music edit, it was very easy...just add content.

The wiki could be useful internally as well as externally if working on a collaboration in-house or soliciting comments from the community. It could also help build local content on current events that currently isn't all located in one place.

Well time to wiki out of here and catch a cat nap!

Week Four

Ahhh, rain and sunshine, in just the right amounts. This week we attempted del.icio.us and tagging. Quite fun actually, once we realized it wasn't something yummy to eat. del.icio.us is a wonderful source, especially if your hard drive crashes because you won't lose your bookmarks. Also, one can access the bookmarks from any computer, not necessarily the one in which all of the bookmarks are saved under favorites, making them more accessible day or night, work, home or on vacation.

Del.icio.us isn't only just an easy way to create bookmarks but a great way to save more permanently bookmarks. It also is a helpful tool in discovering new favorites or bookmarks through the tags.

Besides easy access, finding undiscovered websites through additonal tags, this could be useful in sorting my own favorites. Of course it might be helpful to have an authority control list so I am not giving some things one name and other things different names in which they really should have the same name to make it easy to find.

The most useful thing learned is that bookmarks can be portable and accessed anywhere.

It could be useful in grouping like things together for patrons and for patrons to add to the web of information. If someone wanted a place to search for authors or a list of good books for children, one could create a starting place and new ones could be added or found by anyone through the tags. When developing an Internet web page for an organization, one tries to categorize like things together, assuming how a person might look for them but the assumption might be wrong and the information goes unnoticed and unused.

This could be useful as an in-house resource in which staff could add useful information for each other too.

Would I use RSS?

Hmmm, RSS feeds coming to a Google Reader is very cool. I definitely will use them...nice to keep current. The library could use RSS feeds to advertise programs, fun books to read, or newest technology.

Sunnyside Up!

The sunshine's out, the mountains are snow-capped, life is good! I've been missing my sunbathing but yesterday was just perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. Ah the life of a cat. Sleep, stretch, eat, and sleep some more. Well this week was a bit short on naps as the RSS thing was challenging but fun. I had no idea all of this information was out there! Got the Google Reader account set up and that was a piece of cake. Then I subscribed to not two, but a number of fun RSS feeds. How nice for the information to come to me! Saves time, can keep up with the newest information out there. Definitely the cat's meow! I subscribed to the following and even set up folders to help manage them. For news, one definitely needs a world's view to know what is happening elsewhere as well as perspective on the U.S. so BBC News was my first choice. For national news, NYT, and of course, the WSJ. For fun, and to keep myself amused, Lolcats'n' Funny Pics, for good food, Betty Crocker Recipes & Epicurious.com, for good books, Guys Read, Myreadablefeast, and for educational, A to Z Kids Stuff and Librarian's Index to the Internet.

The easiest way to find feeds was through the Google Reader. By clicking on Add Subsription and search by a favorite subject, I got a nice list. Looking at the list with the most or least subscribers, I could tell the popular ones from the ho hum ones. Also, by date, I could see which ones were kept up to date or others that had passed their prime. Other times I would look for a favorite website, such as LII.org and see if there was one of those RSS symbols. I didn't quite get how to "drag" the symbol over into my reader. Ended up copying and pasting the link directly into the Google Reader. Another curious thing I noticed, and I am a cat, so curiousity is one of my strengths, although it could be a weakness (curiousity killed the cat), is when one is on a site and wants to subscribe, there is usually a drop down or symbols for "readers" but I never saw one for Google Reader. Is Google Reader not popular or common enough to be on these sites?

After an afternoon of napping, I tried Syndic8.com and Technorati. Looked at Boing Boing...a bit different I must say. There was another site that sounded very cool...Slashdot... but a bit too techie for me....I was hoping for general info. updates on Apple but got alot of ho hum stuff.....remember, my favorite pastimes are sunbathing, stretching and eating! Don't want or care about details... too much wasted brain power that would take me away from preening my lovely fur. I didn't get Technorati....what's with rising posts and stories vs. headlines. The headlines seemed the same as the newspaper headlines and rising posts, nice that they are rising but not too much of interest. Perhaps I need a bit more work with these two sites to realize their full potential and usefulness.

Wasn't sure how to add an RSS to my blog. Some sites didn't seem to encourage it....was afraid I might have to pay for it...and on my kitty cat salary of canned and crunchies daily, I wasn't about to give those up. Looking at the layout of the Blog, there must be a place to put RSS but didn't see where...layout, post, somewhere else?

Checked back on my feeds the next day....wow it sure is nice to have them come in one place and so easy! Now to determine, shall I laze around or see what's cooking, what's the latest in news, or find a good book for my owner to read aloud to me? Decisions, decisions! It's ruff being a cat.

Photos

It's a hard life being a cat. Now they want to take my picture with a cell phone of all things. I thought that was what cameras were for. The little person in the family is always chasing me around trying out the digital camera on me ...now the big person is trying a cell phone camera on me and I am really not in the mood. The pictures burned to CD didn't have my glorious poses on them. Must be on another CD but no one wants to look for the "right one" which could have been so easily uploaded. Those are the better photos as I know I posed numerous times with this crazy King Kitty crown on my head...pink of all colors...from the Royal Party at the library...which I didn't even attend! The big person has now learned lots...not only how to take a photo on the cell phone but delete some of the less desirable photos, including the dark blobs, and e-mail them too, something never before attempted. Why someone would want to text message by phone is quite perplexing. The keys on the phone pad are small (that is where sharp claws are quite handy), one has to keep changing from text to symbols and back again to type in the e-mail. One mistake and one has to start all over again. Quite alot of work but compared to dark rooms, photo chemicals and specialized equipment, not too bad... we are now in the 21st century!
